Chapter 15

Interrogate the Interrogator

“Good evening, Detective,” I said when Affird answered his phone. Despite being retired, he preferred to be addressed that way.

“What can I do for you, Ms. Mindle?” His gruff, flat voice displayed the tiniest bit of pleasure to hear from me.

I didn’t want to mention Carrascal, but I did describe what Umber was up to the previous night. I explained how drugs could connect the murders that put Matt in jail.

“But I also thought of a more far-fetched theory I wanted to bounce off you. What if Shortle has gone rogue?”

“In what way?”

“What if she extrajudicially executed those men?”

Affird didn’t reply. Maybe I shouldn’t have brought this up. After all, Affird was known to execute supernaturals back in the day.

Finally, he laughed. “Yeah, right. Why would she do that?”

“It’s the exact same thing she’s accusing Matt of doing. It’s no more unlikely that she could do it. She’s so self-righteous, after all. I could believe she’d take out a domestic abuser and a guy who fires a shotgun next to his kid’s bed. Do you know anything about her that would support this theory?”

“No. Well, there was a story about her when she was a uniformed cop, fresh out of the academy. She caught a guy who mugged an old lady and broke a couple of her bones. When he resisted arrest, Shortle almost beat him to death with her nightstick.”

“See, that’s exactly the kind of thing I’m talking about. If she’s capable of that, who says she couldn’t go even further?”

“Very unlikely. She’s matured since then.”

“That’s what you want to believe.”

“Listen, I’m not saying cops have never killed people for the wrong reasons. But what’s in it for her to execute those guys? Why risk her career and her freedom when we have a justice system to punish them?”

I had to admit, my theory seemed a bit over the top.

“I guess you’re right,” I said.

“I thought you and Shortle were getting along, after a fashion. You were helping her with the occult stuff.”

“She went too far when she arrested Matt. I don’t trust her anymore.”

“She probably has evidence you don’t know about.”

“Yeah.” I recalled Shortle alluding to that fact.

“Give her some slack,” Affird said. “Your theory about the drug connections is a lot more believable.”

“Do you think she’d listen if I told her about the drug theory?”

“I don’t know. But it’s worth a try.”
